Activity 1: Challenge? What's that?
Standard: Language Arts- Knowledge of Language-3a
Strand: Language Arts
Topic: Identifying challenges in different text and analyzing how to face those challenges.
Activity: The teacher will present the question to the class "What does it mean to face a challenge?" After multiple students have answered this question, students will be grouped based off of their seating. In their groups, students will complete a worksheet that gives scenarios of challenges. Students will identify the best way to handle the challenges listed on the worksheet.
After students complete the worksheet, students will write a poem about a challenge they've faced, or how they handle challenges they've faced in their lives
Activity 2: There's some good in the bad.

Strand: Language Arts:
Topic: Advantages of Facing Challenges
Activity: The teacher will give a presentation that includes common challenges that middle level learners face in today's society. After the presentation, the teacher will instruct students to choose one of the challenges that was included in the presentation. The teacher will instruct students to collectively brainstorm long and short term advantages of facing challenges. After the classroom discussion, students will be instructed to draw a picture of the challenge that they chose, and to include a figurative language quote that depicts the advantage of the specific struggle they chose. After students complete their picture and quote, they will present their work in front of the class, and collectively discuss advantages of the challenge.
